Women’s Voice: From America to Sweden
International soprano Andriana Yordanova and renowned pianist Julia Miller will be performing during a lunchtime concert on Tuesday 9 May 2023 at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta at 12:30pm. The intriguing performance highlights women’s participation and contribution to the arts world, hence the focus on female artists: four composers and two performers. This concert is organised by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa.
This delightful programme which gives a voice to women, opens with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Nocturne in g minor followed by 4 songs for voice and piano namely ‘Det fins en gosse och han ar min’, ‘ Carina’, ‘For lange sen’ and ‘vid rano strom’ by Swedish composer Valborg Aulin. Julia will perform a piano interlude Berceuse from 3 Fantasiestucke op.30 also by Valborg Aulin. The exciting recital proceeds with another three songs for voice and piano, this time by American composer Amy Beach, namely ‘My Luve is like a Red, Red Rose’ op.12 no.3, ‘The Secret’ op.14 no.2 and ‘Sweetheart sigh no more’ op.14 no.3. The three Beach songs are followed by another piano solo ‘Autumn’ from ‘Four Sketches’ op. 15 by the same American composer. This highly captivating concert concludes by another three songs for voice and piano by French composer Pauline Viardot namely Bonjour mon cœur! , ‘Madrid’ and ‘Haȉ Luli’!
The Church of Our Lady of Victory, with its painted ceiling by baroque artist Alessio Erardi, is the first church of Valletta and a magnificent setting for the cultural events. It was built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565. It has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta.
After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short audio visual show about the building, history and the restoration of this gem.
