Photographic exhibition celebrating volunteering inaugurated

The Maltese Council for the Voluntary Sector has launched a photographic exhibition with the aim of raising awareness about the voluntary sector and the work being done in the field of volunteering. This exhibition is being held at the Volunteer Centre in Valletta, where the photos submitted, which were selected after a call, will be exhibited in the centre’s main hall during the month of June.

This exhibition is taking place after a photographic competition, which included a call for photographs in two categories, color and monochrome. The chosen theme was that “Volunteering… Moving on! Capture the moment…!” where photographers were called to focus on individuals, groups, events and everything related to all sectors of volunteering, such as social, humanitarian, environmental, animal welfare, education, youth, sport, art, culture, health and inclusion.

During the opening event of the exhibition prizes were also given to the winners of the competition. These were:

Monochrome Projected Images:
3rd place: Conrad Attard – Fireworks in the Making
2nd place: Renata Apanaviciene – I want to Live
1st place: Noel Portelli – Let’s Go

Colour Projected Images:
3rd place: Gergely Vas – The French Squad
2nd place: Stephen Buhagiar – Caring for the elderly
1st place: Renata Apanaviciene – Warm Minutes at Elderly Home

Apart from trophies and certificates, the winners were also given vouchers redeemable at photography shops.

During the launch event, the Minister for Inclusion, Voluntary Organisations and Consumer Rights Julia Farrugia Portelli, highlighted the profound benefits of art and volunteering in our community. She pointed out that “art has the unique power to inspire, transform, and bring people together. When combined with altruism of volunteerism, it becomes a catalyst for positive change”.

Ms Gertrude Buttigieg, Chairperson of the Council, said that through this exhibition it is a wonderful thing to see through talent, even young talent, moments that remind us of volunteering. Maybe volunteering is not always visible, but what was caught on camera shows what is in the heart, helping each other, talents, and even service to the community.

Mr Mauro Pace Parascandalo, Chief Executive of the Council, stated that apart from the support and funds that MCVS provides to voluntary organisations, as a council we always look for different ways to expose their work. In this case we encouraged photographers through this competition to visit VOs so they can witness the work, and with their artistic way, capture beautiful moments which, as you can see here, have now become part of this interesting exhibition.

This competition and the exhibition are initiatives of the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector within the Ministry for Inclusion, Voluntary Organisations and Consumer Rights. More information about the MCVS can be obtained from maltacvs.org.

One can visit this exhibition at the Volunteer Centre, 181, Melita Street, Valletta from Monday to Friday between 9am and 12.30pm.
